All the children of the night are lulled in by the distant sounds of Live in the Depths in full swing. Each person passing through these doors is responsible for the longevity of this monthly event, now #95, which showcases electronic music producers. Around this little island in the heart of North Portland flourishes an intimate and supportive community of mutants and their kindred.

DJ Proqxis 0:00

Proqxis opens the night with the abstract lounge beats one expects from an IDM producer, then leans hard into the progressive rhythms with eclectic tastes, a real selector. The last quarter of the set establishes the abstract tone, leading into the next act with a palette of detuned kicks and thick ambience.

Krill Bumps 1:09:25

Krill bumps takes the stage; the crowd is now primed for the unexpected. And surely with a name like that no one knows what to expect. Some might think of the music of each in the duo, Ifsh and DJ Yub (DJ Yub) and dream up an amalgam. Others might wonder whether this is an obscure drxg reference. Dream as you may, we are all right. Krill Bumps start their hardware performance with abstract ambient IDM rhythms, sprinkle in esoteric ramblings of a far-flung madman or Shel Silverstein-like vox by way of sampler, and bend time further with deconstructed beats. As the set fades, two nameless sprites mirthfully joke that the subtle ASMR-like ambience lacks only the gentle prattling of tentacles.

Hex Wolves 1:54:45

Hex Wolves (https://hexwolves.bandcamp.com/) blasts out of the gates with 130bpm industrial techno. I anticipate this and look around to watch all those still intoxicated on too many Krill Bumps as their feet move autonomously. Ripping arpeggios. Gritty kicks. Maleficent ambience. My body snaps to the rhythm, bouncing without thinking. Looking up there are joker-like smiles on the denizens of the mutated dance floor. In full swing, Hex Wolves ramps the bpm just shy of 160bpm and like the shadow to light, he delivers kicks reminiscent of the bounce of free tekno followed by more industrial techno with visceral acid basslines and scintillating arpeggios. Nundale 2:49:00

Nundale knows no masters as they control electricity during this live eurorack set to do their bidding. They form a distressed mechanical beast with undulating industrial clangs, deep rumbling knells, detuned clattering percussion, and shrieking metallic friction. Glancing at the audience, it seems suspended above the vibrating floor.

Badrich 3:19:50

Then Badrich breaks away the metallic shell of the mechanical beast, revealing the crawling chaos therein. This is madness on full display; the presentation consists of loosely quantized rhythmic organic explorations of the stranger corners of the mind. More mouths agape as the performance unfolds, each ready to accept their amorphous tentacle overlord. With each new iteration, Badrich presents reimagined re-animated roadkill into the listeners’ bestiary.
