Terrains – Production Unit Xero/NNDL (2025) – Album Review

In my mind, I’m always searching for September. That time of year where everything starts to die and anything not dead is set to pack it in for a long slumber. That’s what this album, Terrains, reminds me of – death. Production Unit Xero and NNDL are very different artists, but they seem to be fighting for the same cause – the cause of creating deep chasms into the moldable spirits of us all. Production Unit Xero has been building weapons out of synths and reverb for a couple of decades now – and their collaboration with NNDL is more of showcase of just how razor sharp that aim has gotten. How can a wall sound be so well defined? Questions like that are best kept for oceanographers who deal in plain matter. What happens when a sonic tsunami washes through you and you realize you’ve merely become a filter for this wall of sound?
This is dark, atmospheric ambient music at its finest. Lots of very heavy controlled static and ominous ritualistic melodies acting as the whitecaps of this surging wave. This collaboration feels natural and almost as if it’s being made by one entity. A perfect cohesion of styles. I distinctly remember a live set of NNDL’s where his music sounded like this wall of dread and I absolutely loved it. I’m glad we’re going back to that place. We need to hang out there more and keep searching for September.
Would definitely recommend.
