Desire Marea’s DESIRE was released just before COVID took over our planet. It carries the kind of weight that can only come from someone digging deep into themselves and pulling out something raw. It feels both ancient and futuristic, like an artifact from a sect of humanity that worshiped rhythm as religion and fed on distortion. This is a gospel – one that we all need; filled with absolutely charming industrial chaos to round out the edges of our anxiety. Some might listen to this and think the whole thing runs on blood and delirium, but don’t project that onto the rest of us. This album runs on love.

At the center of it all is Marea’s voice – fractured, shifting, untamed … confident. From incantations and battle cries, to a soft murmur into the void. Not to say this is all experimental or anything – Marea’s voice soars into a kind of spacey R&B that hits all the right spots. All of these tracks are stand out, but “Uncle Kenny” is special. Filled with grief and beauty, it hangs in the air like that morning fog – covering you with a collision of mist. DESIRE thrives on this collision – it’s violent and tender, each track forging its own path in this dark place while dragging the ghosts of the past behind it.

This is an album that can haunt you if you need to be haunted, but it demands and insists on being felt in the bones. Would absolutely recommend.
