For the misread prophets. by BLAK.LESS
I think we underestimate just how seamlessly some genres can float in and out of one another with the right producer. I feel like we also forget how many truly talented people there are out there; especially when they’re working across multiple forms. This breakcore EP is just one of the many ways BLAK.LESS showcases their talent. They also have some pretty intense grunge + breakcore content (among other things) on their Soundcloud and they also dabble in video – some of which features SSX 3 for the PS2 which is always fun. Will be deep diving into their discography more in the future.

Timeless by Goldie
Admittedly, I’m going back to basics on my journey through jungle and drum & bass, so where better than to stop than Goldie’s album, appropriately titled, Timeless. This is such a splendid album and it’s just astonishing how well it holds up. This record is nearly thirty years old, and there are moments where that fact completely disappears and I get lost in the elements. Sure, it’s drum & bass and jungle, but there are so many beautiful ambient touches all throughout this album.

Girlfriends by Girlfriends
This album was such a nice surprise when I was surfing Bandcamp for new releases, especially considering this album was recorded and released in the year 2009, right in the middle of an economic collapse that forced an entire generation to recalibrate their expectations of reality and start reconciling the propaganda they were fed. This album just sounds so fresh and whimsical. It’s very intense in parts but ultimately you can tell there are some good hearts behind this. Bernie Mac Attack is especially fun.

Whalespace by Eric Schlappi
I’ve seen Eric Schlappi perform a couple of times and I’m always really into their sets. Schlappi runs a small company (Schlappi Engineering) that specializes in experimental synthesizer modules, with each product designed by Eric and shaped by decades of live, semi-improvisational electronic performances. I feel like that context matters when listening to Whalespace. You can hear the technical fluency, but it never turns into sterile gear worship. Like a lot of his music, Whalespace feels exploratory, physical, and deeply informed. Give it a listen.

Keys on 94 by Justin Neal
This is a new release from SubSensory Recordings so obviously it had to go on my playlist for the week. Absolutely perfect music for motion – whatever that motion may be for you this week. It may feel early for techno season, but the body has its own calendar and this record is another cog in that movement collective. We’ve got one more big cold front headed our way and that will give way to an entire summer of long nights no doubt filled with music like this to light the way forward. Give it a listen.
