“001” is the inaugural compilation from the Australian label world of knots, featuring eight tracks from a variety of artists including L’Uzure, Production Unit Xero, Solatz, Ena, gi, Matter, Dina Rocaille, and Khimeîra. This album is a smorgasbord of hearty electronic music – just meat and potatoes.
The opening track “Haiku” by L’Uzure sets the tone – and no one is looking back. Good dark ambient doesn’t doesn’t require attention, it takes it from you. Production Unit Xero builds on this perfectly, with beautifully evolving pads and a hypnotic soundscape just below the surface. Solatz brings the perfect balance rythm and tension between movement and stillness inside all of us. Ena compacts a lot of harmonic resonance into tightly woven melodic beats – absolutely love this. Next is gi, and this track is like a rollercoaster on a giant sound wave – it’s like you’re right in the middle of it and there’s nothing you can do but enjoy the ride. matter takes on a slightly lighter approach compared to the darkness you’ve just encountered, but it’s just as entrancing. Rolling beats and chirps – nothing better. What was once not clear, becomes crystal with Dina Rocaille‘s track Seuvrage. Just an absolute banger. Khimeîra ends it with an interesting evolution that feels like lullaby. Big bass’y hits and lots of unsettling melodies. Shit’s dark.
Each track on 001 balances their own blend of sound while staying cohesive to the plot of the album. Excellent complication – absolutely give this a listen.
